"Sssshhhhh!"

So today on my way back from college, I overheard a conversation between two teenage boys in the metro. These two young men were talking about the rapid and unfortunate rise of sexual abuse and human trafficking in our country. One of the guys said that, “hahaha. You know… We’re so lucky we’re guys.” To which the other one replied, “Ya true! Ladko kaa toh rape hi nhi hota.” Before I could even say anything, both of them got off at that station.

To both of them and to all the people who are under this illusion that guys are not abused, let me tell you this. SEXUAL ABUSE IS NOT ABOUT GENDER. It is about how strong and in control the abuser feels and that has absolutely nothing to do with the victim’s gender. For every 6/10 girls who have been abused by the time they reach the age of 17, 4/10 boys have been abused by the time they reach the same age.

We say that our generation has open and unorthodox mentalities and that we will be the ones to bring about a positive change in the world. But how can we when people like these exist?! Because of people like them, the real victims will never come forth and share their story. Because when they do, they are mocked! “WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? YOU’RE A BOY! BOYS DON’T GET RAPED!” or “Sshhhh! KISIKO MAT KEHNA….WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK?!”

All their lives, they’ll think that it was their fault and that it was all because they weren’t manly enough. Unfortunately, such people are the ones who in turn become sex offenders and psychopaths. Because they think it’s normal! And that it happens to everyone! All because the society ridiculed them and shunned them.  And the same people, who never heard them out, blame them; beat them up for turning out to be such monsters. Tell me, is this fair? In anyway? Just because they were born a particular gender?

I’m not trying to justify the deeds of the abusers. It’s unforgivable and by no means acceptable. I’m simply sayin that this could’ve been completely avoided if they would’ve been allowed to speak out and share their story. Please do think it over.
